Happy Saturday :-) Thought I'd share ......

...what I was doing about 4am - couldn't sleep so got up after laying in bed for 21/2 hours.  I desperately want to be able to draw wonderful faces like Doone but can't really commit financially to doing an online class.  I would welcome constructive criticism as to how to make it more 3 dimensional and interesting . I know the theory of shading and have done a little but it doesn't show up here.  (The scribble beside her neck is some blue ink that was on the paper).  I realise that painting it would help; well in theory anyway but painting is another skill I haven't mastered LOL
I need to do some sewing today.
Looks like it's gonna rain big time here.

hey Hun - fabulous start and soooo Brave to Post - DO NOT STOP - it's the shading you need to do next - do a boring grey scale (see tinterweb)it will help you understand what artists call the value scale - creating depth from use of light and dark 'values' - then look at your drawn face and start to add shading to the areas that need to be darker - I can't give Suzi's secrets away but EVERY ONE knows it's the shading and blending ( subtle changes in light and dark across the image) that counts....

grab one of my faces (not a suzi one) off MY website not the blog (you and you alone have my written permission here) and open it up in photoshop (if you have it) and really exaggerate the shading - it will show you where you need to add dark and leave light on your face.

If you do not have Photochop use origami and scissors!:
your nose is a bit too low and the eyes are a tad too close together- fold the paper so it moves nose higher & cut the paper and move the eyes apart & look at the effect it has, put a mid shade grey (light strokes using your pencil held like you are stroking the paper with a feather) UNDER for eye lid to half way down the eye ball (shade thrown over the eye by the lid) and draw in another arch over the top eye lid (it's the shsde of your eye socket), use a 2h, don't worry that it looks like a photo fit - first time faces are just experimentation - if you draw Every Day by next week you will amaze yourself with your progress - Do Not Give Up

I can see you LOve to Draw - save your hard earned cash and do a class - it is worth every penny - stop eating for a while & use the housekeeping money!!!!

Personally, I think you have a lot of talent when it comes to drawing. I can't even draw a snowman and it's just three circles. So I am NOT the person to ask. However, after reading Doone's comment, I remembered there is a web site somewhere from years ago (which means I can't remember where it is and my old bookmarks went away when my computer died last winter) that drew an oval, then drew three imaginary horizontal lines and one vertical line on the oval and began to show where everything needed to be relative to the oval. One thing I remembered was the the line for the eyes needs to be nearly in the center of the oval, which shocked me. I would have put them much higher.

There are tons of examples on the internet and a good search will afford you with beginning lessons. I think you can do this yourself, with help from what's available on the web.

Thanks for the cuttlebug flower pounding tip. I might try it with my Sizzex. It's not good for much else (grin) since I only have two dies.

B&E is right:

this is free and very good:

this is a good starter for face proportions - with yours your 'top half' is fine - you've just elongated the face a bit....

Well done for having a go ann. It looks great to me as I can't draw. I see Doone has given you lots of advice so look forward to seeing how you progress.
Not raining here yet, but I will go and get my washing in!

a girl after my own heart I'd love to draw like Doone, but take heart cos I also used to look longingly at journals by Dyan Reavely and Kate Crane, and wish I could do them, bit by bit I am getting there so there is hope for us un-natural artists, just have fun :)

Hi Anne,
From a person who has lived with 3 talented sisters and a talented brother, I can tell you the trick is to just keep at it, and don't be too hard on yourself! Your drawing is beautiful and if you keep at it, it will get even more beautiful! Patsy from
